Servant Leadership.
University of Mary Day of Service Every year, our school gives the entire campus a day off from school so we are able to volunteer in our community. I have volunteered in thrift stores such as Goodwill and Seeds of Hope, and have cleaned flowerbeds at Edgewood Nursing Home. I always enjoy this day because it allows me to get out in the community and meet new people, while helping those in need. Dreams in Motion For the past four years, I have participated in Dreams in Motion, coaching and playing in wheel chair soccer and basketball. I was introduced to wheelchair soccer and basketball through my UMary soccer team. As players, we have the opportunity to sit in wheelchairs to play with and against athletes who are in wheelchairs everyday of their lives. We also have players who help push individuals who are not able to push themselves. This way, those who are able to push themselves can play competitively and those who are not able to push themselves can also play competitively. Seeing the smiles on these athletes' faces is what makes this event worth it. Special Olympics For the past four years, I have also been a part of Special Olympics bowling. This event is also very special to my heart as I get to work with about four to five athletes at a time and get to make connections with them. My job is to cheer them on and remind them when it is their turn to bowl, but it is so much fun interacting with these athletes. Special Olympics is important to me because I believe everyone is capable of doing a task, even with assistance. It also shows me that most people simply want to be included and do something competitive. These athletes take their sports very seriously, which I can relate to since I am an athlete as well. |
